5 Free Resources for Seniors in Haliburton County | Heart in the Highlands
Caring for an aging parent or loved one can feel overwhelming. The good news is that you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Haliburton County is home to several excellent organizations that provide support for seniors and caregivers. Whether you need help getting to appointments, nutritious meals delivered to your home, or simply someone to check in on a loved one, these services can make a meaningful difference.
Here are five free or low-cost resources every local family should know about.
1. Meals on Wheels
Preparing nutritious meals every day can become difficult due to illness, mobility challenges, or recovery after a hospital stay.
Meals on Wheels delivers healthy, prepared meals directly to seniors living at home, helping them maintain their independence while ensuring they continue eating well.
Meals are available throughout much of Haliburton County, and many people find the service invaluable during periods of illness or while recovering from surgery.
This service may be helpful if your loved one:
- Has difficulty cooking
- Lives alone
- Has recently returned home from the hospital
- Is at risk of poor nutrition
You can find more information here.
2. Transportation Services
Getting to medical appointments can become one of the biggest challenges for seniors who no longer drive.
Haliburton county is large and seniors do not always have friends or family close by who are able to help with getting to and from appointments.
This can significantly impact their access to much needed healthcare.
Community transportation programs help residents attend:
- Doctor’s appointments
- Specialist visits
- Hospital procedures
- Diagnostic testing
- Other essential appointments
Reliable transportation helps seniors remain independent while ensuring they don’t miss important healthcare.

3. Seniors Active Living Centre
The SALC program became available to seniors in Haliburton county in 2025.
It provides social interaction, learning opportunities and ways for seniors 55+ to participate in physical fitness.
It is hosted at various locations through Haliburton and they also have online activities.
These services not only improve quality of life but also reduce isolation, which can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health.
You can view the calendar here.
4. Adult Day Programs
Your local hospital offers much more than emergency care.
Haliburton Highlands Health Services can help connect patients and families with additional community programs and healthcare resources, including discharge planning, referrals, and services that support aging at home.
HHHS also operates an Adult Day Program in Minden, Haliburton and Wilberforce where seniors who are living at home can attend to participate in planned activities designed to encourage social interaction, cognitive and physical activation and assistance with daily living.
Meals and caregiving are also provided and transportation can be arranged.
You can find more information here.
5. The Haliburton County Food Bank
Financial pressures affect many seniors, particularly those living on fixed incomes.
The Haliburton food bank provides assistance for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
No one should have to choose between purchasing groceries and paying for medications or utilities.
They have several location servicing Cardiff, Haliburton, Wilberforce and Minden.
If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

When Community Resources Aren’t Enough
Community programs provide incredible support, but sometimes families need a little more.
You may notice that your loved one is:
- Forgetting medications
- Becoming increasingly unsteady
- Recovering from surgery
- Living with a chronic illness
- Experiencing memory changes
- Needing regular health monitoring
In these situations, private nursing care can provide additional support while allowing your loved one to remain comfortably at home.
At Heart in the Highlands Nursing Services, I provide personalized in-home nursing care throughout Haliburton County. My goal is to help families feel confident that their loved one is safe, supported, and receiving compassionate care tailored to their individual needs.
